ModulAAR

Racemization of amino acids is a crucial process in geochronological dating and the study of ancient proteins. 


ModulAAR, is  an  empirical model designed to simulate amino acid racemization kinetics over geological timescales. 

Unlike previous models that often relied on first-order kinetics and complex parameter sets, ModulAAR employs second-order kinetics to account for the critical role of water concentration in hydrolysis and racemization processes. 

The model distinguishes between internal, terminal, and free amino acids, simulating their hydrolysis, racemization, and decomposition using differential equations. 

A key feature of ModulAAR is its integration of water dynamics, where water availability directly influences reaction rates, reflecting the slowing of hydrolysis in closed systems. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the model's development, calibration, and validation against empirical data, highlighting its potential to offer more accurate and widely applicable insights into amino acid racemization for geochronology and palaeoproteomics. Through the implementation of this model, we aim to enhance the understanding of protein diagenesis and improve the reliability of racemization-based dating techniques.
